Saginaw Transit Authority Regional Services (STARS) is a public transportation system for the urbanized Saginaw area, which travels about 1.2 million miles per year. STARS provides basic transportation needs and is an important partner in economic development. STARS also serves as an effective tool for mobility-challenged citizens. It is the MISSION of STARS to provide safe, efficient, dependable, and affordable public transportation for ALL citizens of Greater Saginaw.

 

Position:                            Mechanic Class A (Full-Time, Non-Exempt)

Position Description:         Responsible for timely and accurate diagnoses and satisfactory repair of Authority vehicles without the aid of direct supervision.

 

Reports to:                         Maintenance Supervisor and/or Assistant General Manager-Maintenance

 

Compensation:                  $17.31 per hour

Required Qualifications:

High School Diploma or Equivalency

Commercial Drivers License (CDL): Class B with P and S endorsements, No Airbrakes restrictions - per Federal and Michigan Department of Transportation guidelines

ASE Certified or State of Michigan Certification:

Heavy Duty Truck Certifications – Gasoline and Diesel Engine Repair, Drive Train, Brakes and Braking Systems, Suspension and Steering Systems, Electrical Systems            

Automotive Certifications – Light Truck Brakes and Braking Systems

Experience:                       Three to five (3-5) years experience working with heavy and light duty vehicles.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Qualified candidates exhibit a professional demeanor and personal initiative in and ownership of assigned areas. Must be able to work both independently and as a team-member with good organizational skills. Must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: machines and tools including design, uses, repair, and maintenance; knowledge of principles and methods of fleet regular and preventative maintenance guidelines and regulations. Must be well-versed in Equipment Diagnostic Programs and handheld diagnostic computers.

Examination/Screening:

Selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a drug and alcohol screen, DOT physical, background and reference check. Must be able to successfully pass skills/knowledge test(s). All employees of STARS are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
